2011 ICT Who's Who in Infection Prevention - Features one of our own!

Infection Preventionists face numerous challenges to ensure that healthcare workers comply with infection control principles and practices, and work diligently to meet ever-evolving demands in the healthcare industry. The monthly journal Infection Control Today (ICT) salutes outstanding infection preventionists, as nominated by ICT readers for the 2011 Who's Who in Infection Prevention, published June 14, 2011.

Our own chapter member, George Allen, from SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, has been recognized by ICT in this Who's Who. APIC Greater NY Chapter 13 celebrates and congratulates George for this special honor! To view the entire "Who's Who" gallery from ICT, click here.

New Materials Out There!     NHSN released its 2009 report for device-associated infections (05-2011) including CLABSI, CAUTI, & VAP. To get a copy of this great report so you can benchmark your units against the NHSN, just click here.

In mid-May 2011, HHS unveiled a new interactive video about preventing healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). These self-paced interactive computer-based video simulation training programs allow the user to "become" one of five characters role playing a healthcare scenario. The videos share knowledge of standard and isolation precautions to take in various healthcare settings. To get started, just go to this link:  http://www.hhs.gov/ash/initiatives/hai/training/

About APIC and the APIC Greater NY Chapter 13

APIC's mission is to improve patient health and safety by reducing risks of infection and other adverse outcomes. APIC advances its mission through education, research, consultation, collaboration, public policy, practice guidance and credentialing.

Our members have the primary responsibility for infection prevention, control and hospital epidemiology in healthcare settings.

The chapter currently has active members throughout New York City and the Tri-State area.

Our Vision: APIC GNY Chapter 13 improves the health and safety of patients, employees, and the members of the Greater NY community by serving as the premier association for devising, communicating and implementing state of the science infection prevention and safety techniques.

Speaker's Bureau -- Infection Prevention Speakers Available!

One of the most important roles of the Association of Professionals in Infection Control & Epidemiology (APIC) is education about the prevention of health care associated infections. The Speakers’ Bureau from the APIC Greater NY Chapter is available for presentations on a range of topics including reduction of device related infections, occupational health concerns, communicable diseases, and more. Our presentations can be geared to students in nursing, medical, and numerous other allied health care fields. We are also available for professional organizations and community groups.

As part of our Chapter’s outreach efforts, these sessions are complimentary. Many of our speakers are Masters’ prepared and all are highly experienced infection prevention practitioners, many of whom work in leading NYC-area hospitals and other healthcare facilities.
